Highlighted Choice

The Substance Film

Coralie Fargeat's bold commentary addresses the oppressive nature of feminine aesthetics and the dreaded aspects of ageing. Hollywood star Demi Moore presents an inspired acting turn as Elisabeth, a 50-year-old celebrity forced into hosting a fitness program on TV. Forced aside thanks to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she undergoes an enigmatic and terrifying procedure known as this experimental method. This produces a younger clone portrayed by Margaret Qualley, culminating in an increasingly toxic connection among both women. Friday 17 October, the streaming service Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10

This Agatha Christie-esque mystery stars Knightley in the role of Laura, a skilled journalist who opts for some time off from reporting on global conflict to join a luxury cruise alongside a gravely sick Scandinavian billionaire and philanthropist, her husband, as well as other affluent passengers. But after an enigmatic female goes overboard during the evening and everyone denies she ever existed, her journalistic curiosity kick in. Out now, Netflix

Presence Film

The acclaimed director challenges his creative boundaries through this innovative supernatural story captured wholly from the viewpoint of the phantom. As a family featuring mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe occupies their new suburban house, the lens – AKA the Presence – tracks their movements. The daughter appears aware of the ghostly being, and the entity appears defensive toward her. But why? It's a fun idea that avoids overstaying, featuring a surprise that may be unexpected. Saturday 11 October, multiple showings, the Sky channel

This Self-Referential Film

Cage embraces his unique fame through this meta comedy caper. He plays a narcissistic film star named Nicolas Cage who agrees to a lucrative offer to appear at a birthday party in Mallorca for billionaire Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Recruited by the CIA to investigate the alleged criminal, his unconventional method is put to the test. This Saturday, 9pm, on Channel 4

The Black Phone

The director's contained scarefest remains effective without requiring a sequel. Located in 1970s Colorado, a series of child abductions has left the children frightened. After Finney gets captured by the kidnapper and imprisoned in a dungeon, he fears a terrible outcome. Yet the old telephone on the wall keeps ringing, with ghostly voices providing assistance, while the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen could save him. A genuinely scary movie. This Saturday, 10.50pm, the Film4 channel

This Dramatic Portrait

In the battle between spirituality and money, it's a knockout win for Mammon in Michael Showalter's wonderfully garish true story of the disgraced religious broadcaster and her felon spouse. The actor plays the greedy Jim, who states at the beginning, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple begin monetising the people's spiritual convictions. It's a riot of tacky decor, overdone appearance and bad faith, however Jessica Chastain succeeds to show the character as a sympathetic figure. October 14th, late night, Film4

This Espionage Thriller

This week's second offering from Steven Soderbergh presents a spy mystery as tight similar to the collars worn by the actor's intelligence officer. He is tasked to identify a mole inside the organization from a group of five – including is his spouse. The two stars are masters of calm composure, leading to a delightful mental battle of deception or honesty develops. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela participate the clever spy entertainment. October 17th, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema
