2026 is Poised to Be Dubbed the Age of the Croaking Craze.

While I found the recent developer-focused presentation was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was not the intended one: I am declaring that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these leaping protagonists. Considering a band of frogs is called an army, it feels they are launching an invasion.

A Legacy of Leaping

Frogs are anything but new to the interactive entertainment. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a cult following. However, their popularity has seemingly surged in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam yields an absolute deluge of results. Granted, some of these are novelty titles, a great many are serious titles centered on frogs.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To grasp this trend, I performed a thorough analysis into the past five years of frog-related gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The results paint a clear picture: a marked rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The amphibian's elevated place in the broader culture is partially visible elsewhere, for example the revival of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. But, the trend in gaming seems especially strong.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

In my opinion, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs offer built-in creative potential for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are ideally shaped to be designed as memorable characters that frequently end up as a fan favorite in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their long tongues and sticky tongues enable a wide array of innovative control schemes.

A number of the featured titles smartly employ these traits. Examples include the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even started—and the chance for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the most significant year so far.

If these games are received positively—and based on past trends, games from this showcase often do—we could very well be entering a full-blown amphibian entertainment revival.
